HHF SUMMER & FALL UPDATES

11/15/2020

As we transition to this new season, we wanted to take a moment to reflect upon our many accomplishments in 2020 despite the formidable challenges of the pandemic and social upheaval. Here’s some of what we accomplished over the summer and early fall:

HHF PROGRAMS

As NYC started to re-open, HHF coaches began to circulate through skateparks to check-in and reconnect with HHF skaters and skaters in the greater NYC community.

We launched a community-based participatory research project to identify program priorities and allow us to be responsive to emerging needs in the community arising due to the changing conditions on the ground.

As part of our HHF for the People initiative, we led seven Community Meetings and Workshops via Zoom providing support, info, expertise, and an opportunity for the community to connect around issues such as COVID-19, Voting Rights, and Dealing with Encounters with the Police.

HHF coaches and the NYC skate community banded together for a day of service in support of the Brooklyn Skate Garden and Pablo Ramirez Foundation. Dozens of volunteers cleaned up Golconda Skatepark, which included a horticulture workshop.
We launched a pilot of the HHF x NikeLab Workforce Readiness Program, which provides an opportunity for NYC skaters to connect, network, and participate in hard and soft skills training led by skaters who work throughout various divisions of Nike. The program's overarching goal is to prepare participants for success in the job market.
HHF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We sponsored and helped organize a series of Voter Registration Events at Tompkins Square Park on September 22nd and 29th, and October 6th.
The HHF team provided logistical support, including securing medics, for a community-led Skaters for Black Lives protest march.

We provided volunteers, financial, and logistical support to Skater Intervention, a community-led event that created conversation within the NYC skate community about sexual abuse, supporting survivors, promoting equality, and making women feel respected within skateboarding.
We supported The People's Youth Hangout, an event focused on empowering youth to realize they can make a positive impact on a local and national level. Live music, poetry, and art workshops were combined with a youth-led march in support of social justice in the heart of NYC.
On October 17th, HHF was proud to support Brooklyn Skate Garden's “Life is Beautiful” skatepark mural project in support of the Pablo Ramirez Foundation. The community-driven event featured painting, skateboarding, gardening, and music.
For the fifth year, we launched a limited-edition collaboration with HUF that benefits the Harold Hunter Foundation. Special thanks to HHF skaters Jack Discon and Joel Glanville who were featured in campaign photos. Click here to shop now and support HHF programming. RIP Keith Hufnagel.

On November 7th, the inaugural Bronx Girls Skate Session was held at River Avenue Skatepark (157). The all-ages event celebrated and promoted the growth and diversity of the Bronx skateboarding scene. It featured a beginner's skate clinic, game of S.K.A.T.E., food, refreshments, raffle, and more.
We’re proud to say that, thanks to the support of many wonderful donors and friends, HHF has weathered this difficult, unprecedented year, and remains strong.

Thank you for your continued support!
