structuring a positive learning environment

Picture

We constructed a space where students felt a sense of community that was friendly, welcoming and safe, where they experienced a sense of mutual respect between students and instructors, were able to learn at their own pace, and feel comfortable asking for help.

“…It’s not like school…You get a lot more freedom here…”
Values of a Positive Learning Environment:
  • A sense of solidarity and being part of something larger than oneself.
  • Working as a collective towards a common goal/project.
  • The curriculum supports creativity and expression, offering myriad opportunities to take risks and feel challenged.
  • Failure doesn’t feel scary because making mistakes is treated as an essential part of the learning process.
