The Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF) is a grassroots skateboard community-based organization that provides support, opportunity, and advocacy for NYC skateboarders. We leverage credible messengers to develop authentic relationships, provide case management, mentorship, and peer counseling, and connect youth/young adult skateboarders (age 14-30) with instrumental support, resources, and opportunities for experiential education/workforce readiness, so they can achieve educational, occupational, and personal success.

Position Overview:
HHF is seeking a passionate, motivated, resourceful, and proactive team player to join its Programs team as a Community Outreach VISTA. The position is part of the Up2Us AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program. The Community Outreach VISTA is responsible for engaging various stakeholders in the skateboarding community throughout NYC, with a particular emphasis on girls/women, queer, trans, and BIPOC communities. 

Our ideal candidate is a skateboarder with a strong philosophical grounding in intersectional social justice values and the spirit of a community activist, who recognizes the power of skateboarding to transform lives, and believes that the resources, strength, skills, and assets of the local and global skateboarding community can be leveraged to positively impact skaters during the critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. The Community Outreach VISTA will report directly to and will be a thought partner with the Director of Programs in assuring that HHF programs are innovative, responsive to community needs, and grounded in socially just practice.

**Please note: Community Outreach VISTA will receive a $6,195 Education Award to be used for student loans, tuition, or education-related expenses at the end of their year of service.

Responsibilities:
  • Actively recruits local skate community members and stakeholders to engage in co-development of programs that are responsive to emerging community needs
  • Works with programs staff to assist in community assets mapping, census, and needs assessment via focus groups, surveys, and interviews to inform design and improvement of programs
  • Recruits community volunteers & partners interested in assisting with community outreach efforts
  • Researches external agencies & organizations for referrals & potential partnerships 
  • Researches/recommends essential staff/community trainings on socially just practices and community building 
  • Participates in all direct service staff trainings/professional development activities
  • Supports Director of Programs and direct service staff to assess program quality and suggest ideas for improvement
  • Works with programs staff and Marketing & Development VISTA to develop in-person and social media outreach/recruitment strategies for HHF programs, workshops, and events

Job Qualifications/Skills:
  • Active participation in and commitment to NYC skateboarding community
  • Experience/comfort working with and advocating for girls/women, LGBTQ, and BIPOC youth 
  • Social justice orientation grounded in intersectionality
  • Creative problem solver with a flexible attitude
  • Experience with social media management/marketing
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Experience or strong interest in doing formal or informal community organizing and/or event planning 
  • You must be 18+ years of age to apply for this position
